964: Famous Short Stories of the 20th Century

Our goal will be to analyze some of the most famous short stories of the 20th century. This will include James Joyce’s The Dead, Ernest Hemingway's A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, Jack London’s To Build a Fire, and others. We will analyze how each of these writers deals with the themes of isolation and mortality. Some focus on stoicism; others on compassion.

Thomas Parker

Thomas Parker studied with Harold Bloom at Yale University and has taught at the Universities of Paris and Haifa and at George Washington University. He also worked in international affairs for the US government for three decades. He lived in Paris, Jerusalem, and New York City before moving to Washington DC in the 1980s.
