953: The Velvet Underground: History and Legacy

July 7-11
1:45 PM - 3:15 PM
In-Person

The Velvet Underground combined limited (to put it mildly) commercial success and profound influence on generations of indie/punk/alternative rock acts. Arguably, the Velvets were THE most important American rock band ever, and this class will discuss how and why. The class will trace the band's history, including their relationship with Andy Warhol in the late 1960's New York underground arts scene, as well as examining their music and its legacy. We will spend at least part of each of four classes listening to songs from, and discussing, one of the Velvet's four albums - every one a classic and each fundamentally different from the others. Please join me in an appreciation of this great American band.

Class Type: Lecture and Discussion

Study Group Leader(s):

Carlos Angulo

Carlos Angulo is a retired lawyer, having worked in both government and private practice, and, later, high school history teacher at Georgetown Day School. He has had a longstanding love affair with rock 'n' roll, not least the Velvet Underground, who he discovered as a teenager growing up in the late 1970's in the Velvets' own backyard, New York City. He is excited to share his passion for rock music and the Velvets through OLLI.
