This course presents one module each day. The first module traces the development of key elements of a capitalist economic system—borrowing, banks, shareholder corporations, stock markets, and British property rights. The second module discusses how the elements of capitalism came together in Britain, and how its agricultural, consumer, and financial revolutions led to the First Industrial Revolution with its social and economic impacts. The third module discusses the Second Industrial Revolution in Europe, and three socialist responses to capitalism. The fourth and fifth modules describe how Sweden’s Social Democratic Party included capitalism in its economy alongside a robust social welfare system.
