952: Modernism in the Midwest

July 14-18
1:45 PM - 3:15 PM
Online

In a small town in Southern Indiana, a visionary corporate executive began an experiment that radically changed his town, and created a mecca for modern architecture. Architects such as Eero Saarinen, I. M. Pei, and Robert Venturi designed breakthrough buildings that helped make Columbus a place where residents could experience modern architecture as part of their everyday lives. That man was J. Irwin Miller, CEO of the Cummins Engine Company, the largest employer in Columbus. Miller knew he had to attract the best people to work at Cummins, so he set about to make his town a place employees would like to live and raise a family. The results, as you will see, are amazing. This study group has a high class size capacity.

Study Group Leader(s):

Jeffrey Swoger

Jeffrey Swoger has had a lifelong passion for architecture. In that vein, he had the honor of knowing the daughter of J. Irwin Miller, and of exploring the world-renowned architecture of Columbus Indiana with her on several occasions. He had personal interactions with some of the most important buildings. He previously taught Masters of Modern Architecture parts one and two, that traced architecture form the first steel framed skyscraper to a Chinese husband & wife team with a wide-ranging practice.
