9707: The Fall of the Berlin Wall and German Unification

The course will explore the well-known and the lesser-known influences and events, both inside and outside of East Germany, that contributed to the peaceful implosion of East Germany in 1989. It will trace the process and historic decisions leading to the re-unification of Germany in October 1990, and assess the results more than 30 years later.

Eduard BrauEduard Brau, PhD, is a German citizen and economist who retired from the International Monetary Fund. He studied in West-Berlin in the early 1960s, made friends in the East, and has followed developments in the eastern parts of Germany since.
