American University’s (AU) campus is far more than bricks and mortar. Over the past two decades, the entire 84-acre campus of American University (AU) has been transformed into an award-winning and accredited arboretum and public garden. The welcoming main entrance to the campus, the meandering walkway traversing the rolling landscape, the layering of trees in composition with ornamental plantings, combination of shrubs, perennials, ornamental grasses, bulbs interwoven with areas of sculpted lawn – all combine to create a model urban campus. Featuring affordability, the concept aims to engage learning, promote the university and draw in the local community. AU’s Arboretum & Gardens plays a significant role in creating a campus community, fostering teaching and learning opportunities, internships to students and opportunities for volunteers, reinforcing AU’s commitment to be a leader in sustainability, and a good steward of the environment.

Landscape Architect Michael Mastrota, Arboretum Manager for AU, who led this transformation will guide our group on a tour highlighting the innovations that changed a commuter campus into an inspirational experience. In a typical spring, the arboretum is the backdrop of bustling campus life. Our tour is timed to observe the persisting beauty of AU’s Arboretum & Gardens as it bursts forth with greenery and colorful blossoms, so that we will see it at its peak.
