649: Middlemarch: A Study in Provincial Life

Thursday
1:45 - 3:15
Starting September 26
Online

George Eliot’s Victorian masterwork takes on all the problems of modern life: politics, religion, relationships, debt, the advancement of technology and medicine—ultimately the human condition, in ways that still are relatable to this day. We will read Middlemarch, book-by-book, parallel to our lives and the communities we belong to. We’ll accomplish this primarily through joint discussion of the novel and the narratives of our lives in relation to past and current events. The secondary approach will be through the methods that narratology offers: the study of the structure of stories and their effects on readers. Please read the prelude and "Book I: Miss Brooke" before the first meeting.
