January Study Group: Four Photographers Documenting 20th Century America

This study group will focus on four extraordinary photographers – Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, Roy DeCarava, and Esther Bubley – who created images that picture America from 1930 to 1990.  Photographs, like other historical sources, are interpretations, versions of “reality” that document facts, express ideas and opinions, and also tell stories.  The class will develop strategies for interpreting photographs that will be examined, and consider each photographer in his or her historical context and life experience.

The study leader Elly Greene, whose wide-ranging career has included teaching history and designing curriculums in history education, has been hailed for developing an imaginative, interactive course that highlights the photographer as a lens on history. Course participants have described Elly as a “dynamic, extremely knowledgeable teacher.”
