January Study Group: Understanding Families through Plays

This study group will explore family dynamics and conflicts through reading and discussion of two powerful works, Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Lansbury, and Over the River and Through the Woods by Joe DiPietro.  Raisin, the first Black play produced on Broadway, dramatizes three generations of a family and their dreams.  In Over the River, a funny, yet poignant work portraying Old World Italian grandparents and their only (single) grandson, we see the price a younger generation pays for his devotion to his elders.

A ten-year OLLI study group leader, Dr. Karen Gail Lewis, is a long-practicing family therapist.  Year after year her classes on understanding family through drama have won applause as “fantastic.”
