830: Exploring 2,500 Years of Yoga
July 16-18
9:45 AM -
11:15 AM
In-Person
Yoga’s origin 2,500 years ago in India began with wandering ascetics seeking to transcend personal suffering, Yoga practitioners realized with physical postures, breath, and meditation that their bodies and minds could perceive a lasting spirituality. Yoga had been confined to Southeast Asia and its philosophy was absorbed into Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Islam. Only since the 1700s were Yoga’s practices transmitted to the West and synthesized into a modern yoga in Europe and US. The 1960s youths’ embrace of Eastern metaphysics helped embed yoga into our cultural psyche and is now a bedrock of fitness programs. Yoga’s philosophy, psychology, and physiology will be fully explored.
